Physical Education Renegade Hockey
Currently at BOIC ( Bay of Islands College ) our junior students ( yr 9, yr 10 ) are getting a taste of what the new year of schooling will bring them. I am one of the many Bay of Islands College students participating in this as I am still a junior. The way it works is we move our junior students to the timetable they will have the future year to prepare them for what may come. This is called Jump Start. We do this every year on the last 2 academic weeks of school we have left. I have also changed timetables, meaning I am currently taking the classes I will have when I am an NCEA student. One of my new classes is P.E. I have had a taste of this subject and we are currently learning skills for a game called Renegade Hockey.
Today in Physical Education we were able to put all the skills, in the game Renegade hockey that we had learnt from our previous lessons to the test. During P.E we were able to play a full court game. This was our first real game or Renegade Hockey as a class. Afterwards we were tasked with writing a reflection about what we learnt and how our day went. This was an exciting experience as it allowed us to see what we all took out from the few lessons of learning we had. It allowed us to work in a team and cooperate with new people, as we have only had a few lessons in this new P.E class. We all did well and demonstrated the skills we had learnt through our individual performances.
This is my reflection
Today I would give myself 4/5 for effort and participation in this training because today I found it hard to adapt to the full court play. I struggled with putting what we learnt from the previous two lessons into a full court game with all members of my class. My effort was lacking in the beginning of the game as I didn't really participate for a small period of the first half due to me starting to get used to the game. As time went on I felt the need to participate more and as I did I managed to score a few points. I tackled a few balls and got more into the game as time went on.
A skill I worked on improving was tackling. Tackling in renegade hockey is when you attempt to steal the ball of the opposition by either taking it from them or knocking it out of their possession. I improved this skill when we were doing peer coaching by attempting to tackle while me and my partner were still working together and when one of us was with Whaea Ruth I practiced my ball handling skills. I did this so when it did come to tackling instead of just knocking the ball away from the person I could possibly steal it and be able to control it to use it to my advantage and continue playing.
Today I helped the people in my team as I contributed to the work whilst playing our full court renegade hockey. Me and my team helped each other by playing as a team and when it came to having our half times, we all came together as a group, subbed out our goalie and gave each other tips on how we could improve our individual performance. As we worked together we ended up communicating and playing even better as a team after our half time. We had realised that a few particular people were doing a lot of work so we all took it upon ourselves to contribute a bit more to spread the load. My team was named the whareware’s and we all cooperated well together and ended up winning our full court match. As an individual, before our game I helped my partner when we were doing peer coaching, by giving them a recap of the rules and skills we had learned in our previous lessons. We both demonstrated that we understood and were listening to our partner teaching us as we were practicing the skills before our game and displayed the skills individually throughout the game.
Someone who helped me learn was my partner. During today's learning my partner was Ngapua. During our peer coaching we each demonstrated the few skills we had left to learn as we came back from our small session with Whaea Ruth. We each displayed the skill properly and retaught what we learnt from Whaea Ruth. We both went over the skills we learnt in our previous lesson at the beginning of our P.E period. We both showed that we were listening to what the other was teaching as we displayed the skills during the game. Before we were split up into teams we practiced all the basic skills we had learned. Pulling each other up when we knew we were doing something wrong was a part of it. We both went over the rules and displayed what we had learnt throughout the week in our full court game. One skill I can guarantee he taught me was how you catch the ball with your stick. This is the one time we were allowed to bring the stick above your head as we needed to control the ball to the point that it was playable. He demonstrated the skill for me as he explained the purpose, while we were doing our peer coaching. That is the most important thing I have taken away from him helping me, was that particular skill. It is important as doing this wrong could possibly harm a person on your team or the opposition, as they could possibly come into contact with your stick whilst you are doing this skill. So it is important that he taught me how to do it right.
Our team is starting to work well and cooperate together to improve overall team performance. Our team, as mentioned before, won our game of renegade hockey. To a lot of people who saw it would say it was because of a particular individual performance. I think we won because of our team work. The effort we all put in was a big part of how we won. Another, was how well we cooperate with each other. We all worked together passing the ball, tackling, generally working as a team. I found that our communication and the way we spread out amongst the court improved our overall team performance. We worked well and succeeded with our communication throughout the game. In my opinion all the cooperation and working together our team did created a positive atmosphere for the members, causing us to participate and work together well.
Something I really enjoyed was playing our full court game. The reason why I enjoyed this is because all the practice and learning we have been doing was to build us to play a full court game. Me, being the person I am, love to play sports and other games, so being able to play a proper match was pretty exciting. I found it very interesting to put all our learning and mini games for practice ,to the test. We each displayed the skills we learnt through peer coaching as we played our game. This gave us all the opportunity to play a proper full court match and to see who was listening and willing to put the skills to the test. My team cooperated well throughout the game, as well as improving in the second half. At this point I think we were used to the game and playing together. As we moved throughout the game I found that our cooperation and team work improved. All showing the basic skills of the game we had learnt, such as, trapping, tackling, flicking and so on. I, as an individual , had a lot of fun playing this game. The game was new to me but I had fun regardless. I even managed to score a few goals throughout this week of learning.

Task 2 - Resources
This term in 10R we have been looking at Managing the Environment. One of the things we are looking at through this topic is resources. We have been looking at different kinds of resources. We have been tasked with giving a brief response to the resources we researched.
A resource is something people use to meet their needs. Renewable resources , Non - Renewable resources and Human resources are examples of the categories specific resources fit into. Renewable resources are things like water where they provide hydro power to create electricity. Non - renewable resources are things like fossil fuels that provide gas. Human resources are people who provide a service to help you with your needs.
Hydro power is an efficient way to create energy. It is a renewable resources which is an energy source that are able to supply a continuous source of clean energy. Hydro power is quite an efficient way of creating electricity as we have many water resources around the world. The only way that this will stop is if we run out of water. So as long as we have water we will be able to create electricity through hydropower which is an example of a renewable energy source.
